Auriculotherapy – Acupuncture
Auricular Therapy, also called Auriculotherapy, is both a diagnostic and an integrative treatment procedure that is used for pain relief and the alleviation of addictions. The principles of Auricular Therapy are based both upon Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine and upon neurological reflex therapies that were discovered in Europe. The essential premise in Auricular Therapy is that there are a neurological reflexes and energetic correspondences between specific areas of the external ear, or auricle, and other parts of the body that are arranged in the pattern of an inverted foetus. Detection of selective ear reflex points can be determined by electrical measurement of lowered skin resistance, or by the physical observation of small regions of skin discoloration or skin protrusions.
Treatment of these reactive ear reflex points can be achieved by the insertion of acupuncture needles and/or ear seeds (including magnetic balls or plant seeds) applied to the ears or by transcutaneous electrical stimulation. The seeds can be left in place to stimulate the acupressure points and allow them to benefit from the effects of acupuncture after they leave the clinic. The patient can rub these seeds when they feel a re-emergence of their symptoms. Auricular Therapy is effective to reduce chronic pain and anxiety within a few minutes of treatment and can alleviate the aversive symptoms of substance withdrawal or reduce the craving for addictive medications.

Are there any contraindications?
In general, auriculotherapy is a safe and low-risk practice. The rare side effects depend on the type of instrument used to stimulate the pinna: acupuncture is not recommended for those with injuries or abrasions at the level of the auricles (as they could lead to infections), while the other techniques are risky for pregnant women, pacemaker wearers and people suffering from epileptic seizures.
